Overview

If you've seen the windows and glass in the Empire State Building, then you've seen Alpen products! Alpen's windows and insulated glass units enhance aging office buildings, custom homes, a large range of passive house buildings (both PHI and PHIUS), government offices, college dorms, national park visitor centers, and multifamily housing all across America. Alpen products are even in Antarctic research stations!

Alpen High Performance Products draws on more than four decades of experience to provide super-insulating and thermally efficient residential windows, commercial windows, and architectural glass, as well as award-winning high performance secondary windows for commercial retrofit projects.

  Press Releases

  • Louisville, CO – BuildingGreen, a well-respected leading source of trusted and unbiased information among sustainable building professionals for over 35 years, annually recognizes the most innovative green building products transforming the industry. ALPEN HIGH PERFORMANCE PRODUCTS, INC., a longtime U.S. leader in high efficiency window technology across commercial and residential markets, announced today that the company has once again been recognized by this highly regarded publication for its newly patented secondary window insert, WinSert, earning a spot on the Top 10 Products list for 2022.

The much-anticipated product winners are selected from thousands of innovative options available on the market each year—this year with a focus on products that fundamentally change building systems by conserving energy, water, and resources while reducing carbon emissions and their impacts. The BuildingGreen editors seek out products that significantly improve upon standard “business-as-usual” practices and provide elegant solutions to industry-wide problems. “Alpen’s WinSert helps solve one of the building industry’s biggest challenges: how do we cost-effectively retrofit aging, poor-performing commercial windows?” said Brent Ehrlich, BuildingGreen's products and materials specialist. “The company’s lightweight ThinGlass technology can help create a high-performance window system without significantly altering the building’s looks or office workflow.”

Buildings are responsible for about 40% of energy waste and greenhouse gases in the United States, and many older buildings are still equipped with single-pane windows. This problem can be improved by replacing existing single-pane windows entirely, but that can be extremely expensive and disruptive. WinSert secondary window inserts provide an ultra-lightweight, custom retrofit solution to turn existing leaky, low-performing windows into air-tight, high-performing windows which improve the building envelope without the cost, time, and disruption required for window replacement.

Recently certified by the Attachments Energy Ratings Council (AERC), WinSert’s super-insulating, high-performance patented design performs up to 48% better than competing secondary window options, and many other retrofit solutions simply do not meet the comprehensive needs of the market. “There is a tremendous opportunity to reduce the energy usage of the built environment just by addressing the vast quantity of aging single-pane or otherwise low-performing windows,” said Brad Begin, CEO of Alpen High Performance Products. “We’ve paired our high-performance window expertise with our innovations in thin glass to develop WinSert as a cost-effective retrofit solution that allows building owners to upgrade commercial windows without the massive capital expenditures and business interruptions of window replacement.”

This marks Alpen’s third time having its innovative products recognized as a top BuildingGreen product. First, in 2007 Alpen’s ultra-high performance fiberglass windows, now called the Zenith series, received recognition for being the highest performing windows ever manufactured for broad commercial availability. Again, Alpen received recognition in 2020 for its ThinGlass Triple and ThinGlass Quad pane high-performance windows with an innovative use of thin glass center panes to provide thermally efficient windows with a much lighter profile. Alpen is one of only a select few companies to ever be recognized three times by BuildingGreen in this prestigious award’s twenty-year history, further affirming Alpen as an innovation leader for the window, door, and glass industry. “At Alpen, we take great pride in continuously pushing the envelope to bring new and innovative window technologies to market to improve the fenestration industry,” said Begin. “It’s safe to say that we are extremely honored to have been recognized by such a prestigious and highly regarded organization as BuildingGreen, not once, but three times in the last 15 years.”

  • Louisville, CO – ALPEN HIGH PERFORMANCE PRODUCTS INC., manufacturer of North America’s highest performing windows, announced today that the Attachments Energy Rating Council (AERC) has certified and listed the company’s newly patented line of high performance window inserts, WinSert, in its certified product database. The WinSert line stands apart from other AERC certified products with the lowest U-factor values in the commercial secondary window category, rated as low as 0.16, and a significant reduction in air leakage from 2.0 cfm/ft2 to 0.06 cfm/ft2 compared to the baseline single- and double-pane windows.

“We are proud of the work and innovation that has gone into the development of WinSert as a high-performance secondary window solution," said Brad Begin, CEO of Alpen High Performance Products. “We are thrilled to have its superior performance verified and certified by the esteemed Attachments Energy Rating Council so that customers may easily analyze and compare the benefit of adding any WinSert variation to a primary single-pane or double-pane window.”

All six variations of WinSert feature super-insulating fiberglass frames and innovative ‘thin glass’ technology, similar in thickness to that used in flat screen televisions rather than traditional window glass, that together improve the thermal performance of existing windows at a fraction of the cost of window replacement. The WinSert products that have been certified and listed include:

    •     Alpen WinSert Plus Inside Mount
    •     Alpen WinSert Plus Overlap Mount
    •     Alpen WinSert Plus Ultra Inside Mount
    •     Alpen WinSert Plus Ultra Overlap Mount
    •     Alpen WinSert Lite Inside Mount
    •     Alpen WinSert Lite Overlap Mount

These high-performance window inserts attach directly to the interior of existing windows without any drilled holes or penetrations of the building. The result is reduced energy impact on the existing structure, a dramatic reduction in installation time, and elimination of almost all disruption for building occupants. The high-performance components combined with ‘thin glass’ present a massive opportunity to reduce embodied carbon in the built environment.

AERC provides an un-biased, third-party certification of the energy-saving potential of a window attachment product, such as blinds, shades, and storm windows. A sophisticated process of material testing and window modeling is used to gauge the degree to which a window attachment will improve the performance of the existing window in reducing heating and cooling usage.

The Commercial Secondary Window program was launched late last year alongside its existing residential products certification program. AERC recognized the potential of secondary windows and prioritized the development of a commercial rating and certification program in order to provide the industry with credible data on the energy performance of these products. The commercial secondary windows program adopted similar, rigorous performance metrics used by AERC’s residential program including U-factor, Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC), Visual Transmittance (VT), and Air Leakage.

“We are pleased to welcome WinSert from Alpen to the list of AERC certified products,” said Ralph ‎Vasami, Executive Director of AERC. “WinSert is an ultra-high performance product and the AERC certification will provide consumers the ability to determine its proven advantages in saving energy and providing improved comfort in today’s energy-conscious environment.”

More information about WinSert can be found on Alpen’s website. AERC certified products and their ratings can be found using the AERC Certified Product Search tool.

About the Attachments Energy Rating Council (AERC)
The AERC is an independent, public interest, non-profit organization whose mission is to rate, label and certify the energy performance of window attachments such as blinds, shades, shutters, and storm windows. AERC is made up of a diverse set of stakeholders, which include product and component manufacturers, non-profit organizations, government bodies, testing labs and utility companies. Partially funded by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), AERC provides accurate and credible information about the energy performance of window attachments, which helps the public–including homeowners, architects and builders—make informed decisions when it comes to buying window attachment products.
