Louisville, CO – ALPEN HIGH PERFORMANCE PRODUCTS INC., manufacturer of North America’s highest performing windows, announced today that the Attachments Energy Rating Council (AERC) has certified and listed the company’s newly patented line of high performance window inserts, WinSert, in its certified product database. The WinSert line stands apart from other AERC certified products with the lowest U-factor values in the commercial secondary window category, rated as low as 0.16, and a significant reduction in air leakage from 2.0 cfm/ft2 to 0.06 cfm/ft2 compared to the baseline single- and double-pane windows.
“We are proud of the work and innovation that has gone into the development of WinSert as a high-performance secondary window solution," said Brad Begin, CEO of Alpen High Performance Products. “We are thrilled to have its superior performance verified and certified by the esteemed Attachments Energy Rating Council so that customers may easily analyze and compare the benefit of adding any WinSert variation to a primary single-pane or double-pane window.”
All six variations of WinSert feature super-insulating fiberglass frames and innovative ‘thin glass’ technology, similar in thickness to that used in flat screen televisions rather than traditional window glass, that together improve the thermal performance of existing windows at a fraction of the cost of window replacement. The WinSert products that have been certified and listed include:

- Alpen WinSert Lite Inside Mount
- Alpen WinSert Lite Overlap Mount
These high-performance window inserts attach directly to the interior of existing windows without any drilled holes or penetrations of the building. The result is reduced energy impact on the existing structure, a dramatic reduction in installation time, and elimination of almost all disruption for building occupants. The high-performance components combined with ‘thin glass’ present a massive opportunity to reduce embodied carbon in the built environment.
AERC provides an un-biased, third-party certification of the energy-saving potential of a window attachment product, such as blinds, shades, and storm windows. A sophisticated process of material testing and window modeling is used to gauge the degree to which a window attachment will improve the performance of the existing window in reducing heating and cooling usage.
The Commercial Secondary Window program was launched late last year alongside its existing residential products certification program. AERC recognized the potential of secondary windows and prioritized the development of a commercial rating and certification program in order to provide the industry with credible data on the energy performance of these products. The commercial secondary windows program adopted similar, rigorous performance metrics used by AERC’s residential program including U-factor, Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC), Visual Transmittance (VT), and Air Leakage.
“We are pleased to welcome WinSert from Alpen to the list of AERC certified products,” said Ralph Vasami, Executive Director of AERC. “WinSert is an ultra-high performance product and the AERC certification will provide consumers the ability to determine its proven advantages in saving energy and providing improved comfort in today’s energy-conscious environment.”

About the Attachments Energy Rating Council (AERC)
The AERC is an independent, public interest, non-profit organization whose mission is to rate, label and certify the energy performance of window attachments such as blinds, shades, shutters, and storm windows. AERC is made up of a diverse set of stakeholders, which include product and component manufacturers, non-profit organizations, government bodies, testing labs and utility companies. Partially funded by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), AERC provides accurate and credible information about the energy performance of window attachments, which helps the public–including homeowners, architects and builders—make informed decisions when it comes to buying window attachment products.
