Union Station

There is no place in Kansas City - or any city - quite like Union Station. This fully restored landmark is Kansas City's most prominent destination for cultural and entertainment activities. Union Station Kansas City, Inc. is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization, USKC depends on supporter's donations, Union Station memberships and community fund - raisers to provide educational programs and events for Kansas City. Built in 1914, Union Station encompasses 850,000 square feet. In its prime as a working station, it accommodated tens of thousands of passengers every year. At its peak during WWII, an estimated one million travelers passed through the Station. Closed in the 1980s, the Station sat empty and neglected, escaping demolition on several occasions. In 1996, a historic bi-state initative was passed to fund the Stations's renovation, which was complted in 1999.
And just like in 1914, you can catch the train at Union Station's Amtrak stop. The Station is once again a popular destination for the surrounding community just stopping by for lunch or to mail a letter at Kansas City's main post office. The station also draws tourists from all over the world who marvel at the Grand Hall's 95-foot ceiling, three 3,500-pound chandeliers and the six-foot wide clock hanging in the Station's central arch. Today's Union Station is filled with commercial office, retail/restaurant and exhibit spaces for traveling exhibits produced by the Smithsonian, a planetarium, an interactive science center and a vibrant Theater District featuring KC's larges screen theater as well as live theater, and more.

Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts

Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts is Kansas City's iconic performance home to the Kansas City Symphony. Kansas City Ballet, and Lyric Opera of Kansas City. The gift of Muriel McBrien Kauffman, brought to life through her daughter, Julia Irene Kauffman, provides world class, diverse performing arts experiences to everyone in Kansas City. The Kauffman Center is comprised of two performances spaces: Helzberg Hall, a 1600 seat concert performance hall, and Muriel Kauffman Theater, an 1800 seat proscenium theater. Designed by world-renowned architect Moshe Safadie, the Kauffman Center opened in September 2011 and has hosted well over 4 million ticketed guests in its first decade of operations.
This is a walking tour, departing from Kansas City Convention Center.
Advance Sign-Up Required. Space is limited on both tours. Advance sign up is required on a first-come, first-serve basis. There is no additional cost to participate in a building tour, however conference registration is required. You may sign-up when you register for the conference or by adding a tour to your existing registration. Tours will depart from Kansas City Center.
